Well, First off, Discord SUCKS, Im pretty sure even if you dont care about privacy or stuff like that, You would still know
Why even use it?
People only seem to use discord because others do, Same argument applies to whatsapp, But i dont really see the use case for discord
Maybe I'm out of touch, But a "Gaming Chat Program" Doesnt make sense, Yet, Dispite it being made for gaming, Many people just use it as their main messager
People may say its for gaming because of rich presense, But XMPP has this, Rich presense is not a new thing, Hell, I Would say XMPP does better rich presense, As if people care about rich presense
I Just dont see whats the hype with discord
Privacy, And Alternitives
Discord... Suprise, Has terrible privacy
I Am not going to list all privacy concerns here, But you can read up on it here.
Alternatives
- Matrix
This is pretty solid, Has good privacy, Decentrilized, And good for somebody who just wants a discord-like chat program, For a matrix client, I Recomend Element, Matrix servers are called "Spaces" and they contain rooms, which are like group chats, You can even put spaces into spaces or link to other spaces in your space - Revolt
This is the closest one to discord, However i would not recomend this due to it not being encrypted, Also not decentrilized, If you just want something which looks and acts like discord and you hate change, then consider choosing this, But in my opinion, Matrix is just better, You are better off choosing matrix, A Pro with revolt is that it has more active users then matrix - Session
There isnt much to say about this, except that it has extreme privacy, However its more like whatsapp, So this is better for just chatting to a friend or making a group chat, Not so for servers, Session doesnt have accounts but has user IDs, I Would say its pretty cool, Also Peer To Peer - SimpleX
Its like session, There isnt much to say about this - XMPP
XMPP Is more advanced then matrix for the regular user, There are multiple encryption options like GPG, OMEMO and stuff like that, Alot of the clients like pidgin, PSI, and stuff have UIs like MSN messenger from the 2000s, I Know there are clients with modern UI's But i havent really tried them, Also i havent joined any communities or made anything much in XMPP, Im havent tried making a public server on it, But i think it may be like how session does it, Also XMPP is decentrilized
